Sunshine 811 Underground Utility Marking: A Key Step in Swimming Pool Engineering Design

As we launch the engineering design phase for your new swimming pool, we coordinate with Sunshine 811 to mark the location of underground utility lines on your property. This ensures our engineering plans are accurate and that excavation is performed safely. While no action is required on your part, you may notice workers marking your property in the coming days.

Why Sunshine 811 is Important

Underground utilities such as electricity, water, sewer, gas, and communications lines must be identified before any excavation begins. Hitting one of these lines could cause service interruptions, damage, or safety hazards. Florida law requires that all underground utilities be marked, and Sunshine 811 is the state’s free service that organizes this process.

Seeing workers mark your property is a normal—and required—part of the swimming pool construction process. It’s a sign that your project is moving forward safely and correctly.

How It Fits Into Your Pool Project

After you sign your pool contract, AQUAVIX submits an initial request to Sunshine 811. This allows utility companies to visit your property and mark the location of any underground lines. These markings help us prepare precise site plans for your swimming pool’s engineering and permitting. A few days before excavation begins, we’ll request Sunshine 811 to mark the lines again so the markings are fresh and visible for construction.

What You Should Expect at Home

  • Workers on Site: Over the next few days, one or more utility representatives may arrive to mark your property. They may come at different times since each utility (electric, gas, water, sewer, telecom, etc.) is handled separately.
  • Markings on the Ground: You’ll see spray paint or flags in different colors across your yard. Each color represents a type of utility (e.g., red for electric, blue for water, yellow for gas).
  • Access to the Backyard: If utilities extend into your backyard, workers may need access. They’ll typically ring your doorbell to request entry.
  • Different Crews: Some workers may be city employees; others may be contractors hired by utility companies.

Your Role as the Homeowner

There is nothing you need to do for this step. We simply ask that you allow access to your property if a utility worker requests it. Once all lines have been marked, Sunshine 811 will provide us with a report confirming the completed markings. At that point, AQUAVIX will schedule a site visit to document the utility locations as part of our engineering plans.
